Events and Celebrations

Every year West-Mont School holds wonderful Events and Special Days that enrich the lives of students, teachers and parents. The exact date of these Events and Special Days can be seen on our Calendar Page.

Below are descriptions of these Events and Special Days.

Fundraisers

Part of our fundraising is to fulfill the Social Responsibility part of our curriculum.  We hold Casual Days to fundraise for our adopted student in Malawi.  The children bring a twoonie and wear casual clothes instead of their uniforms, about once a month.  The Terry Fox Run is a school-wide fundraiser where the students bring a loonie or a twoonie to support Cancer Research, and we send it collectively.  We have a small run taking advantage of our location at Witty's Lagoon. We sometimes participate in Jump Rope for Heart, where children fundraise individually to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation, then all participate in an afternoon of skipping rope.

Part of our fundraising is to reduce costs on class events, improve the school or increase classroom materials.  Popcorn and concession sales help with the Outdoor Education Camp Thunderbird trip.  The Charity Auction, held in November, is organized by the PAC.  The funds are partly for charity and partly for the school.  Parents are asked to help solicit auction items and generally work on setting up the event.  The For the Love of Books Tea is organized by the school and the parents to help increase our library collection.  Parents bring "tea-type" desserts, then sponsor a book for the library.  The children learn poems, stories and songs to entertain the guests.

Celebrating Learning

The Science Fair, the Spelling Bee, and the Art Show are events where parents may be asked to come to see their children's work.  The Cultural Fair celebrates cultures around the world and parents are often asked to contribute to a potluck with "cultural" dishes to share.  This is also a "dress-up" event with staff, students and parents often dressing in clothing from different cultures.

Celebrating Talent

Children's talent is celebrated in a variety of events including, the already mentioned, For the Love of Books Tea.  Other venues for celebrating talent are the Winter Celebration, the Variety Show, and the Annual Open House.  Parents will be asked to help their children learn their parts, work on their costumes (if needed) and cheer.

The annual Track Meet held at the University of Victoria lets the students meet and compete.  They run, jump and throw with students from a variety of independent schools in the Victoria area.  Each class needs parents to be responsible for a small group at this event.

Celebrating the School

The Annual Welcoming Ceremony and BBQ is the Board's annual event.  Food is provided.  It's a great opportunity to meet and greet the other parents, staff and children at the start of the new year.  The Annual Open House is an opportunity to bring new families to the school to see what it's all about.

Celebrating the Holidays

Remembrance Day, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Earth Day and Thanksgiving are included in our classrooms or as special assemblies.  On Halloween we have an evening family dance with everyone in costumes.  In the afternoon, the children have a Costume Parade.

Volunteering

Along with the classrooms, the Garden and the Library are hot spots for volunteering. Check with the school and our Volunteering page for more information on how you can help.
