Library Classes

Grade Three students will spend 45 minutes weekly in the Library Skills Class being introduced to the library system in order to become familiar with, and confident using, the great resource our library provides. Classes have been conducted for the past 12 years by the Librarian and students are amazed at the variety of books we have which they were not aware of. The Poetry and Biography sections are particularly popular once they have been explored.

During these sessions they are introduced to the Dewey Decimal System, shown how to use the computer for book searches, instructed on the use of dictionaries, taught reference skills and given practice using the card catalogue. Although the card catalogue in our Library is not current, it is used to demonstrate to students alternate methods of book searching which they may encounter.

Once a week the Dogwood, Arbutus, Douglas Fir, Cedar and Garry Oak classes, with their older class "Reading Buddies", use the Library to choose books for this time when the older students read to or help the younger children read.

Each classroom has an assigned time to visit the Library during the week to choose books to borrow for pleasure reading. In addition, many students use the library as a quiet area to work on assignments or to relax and read on their own during recess breaks.
